Splurge: Stroller Get your own custom-designed hot rod—stroller, that is

DAVID FIELDING

Too posh to push? Not exactly. Introducing the Roddler by Kid Kustoms, possibly the hottest set of wheels you—or your kid—will ever own (actually, this set belongs to NBA all-star LeBron James and his son, Bryce). Two-tone leather bonnet, suede bucket seat, custom red-walled Kenda tires and, most importantly for any happenin’ dad, a fully integrated Harman/Kardon Guide + Play sound system with GPS navigation. The Roddler is the brainchild of Montreal’s Jamie Coblentz, California custom king Joe Iacono, fabrication specialist Jason Albert and their friend Stephen Beallor. Each stroller is made to order. Ostrich leather carriage? Built-in LCD monitor? A paint job by George Barris, the man who did the original Batmobile? Hey, it’s your baby. As for cost, even LeBron James’s tricked-out model comes in a hair or two shy of a classic Silver Cross pram. But Coblentz admits three grand is steep for most parents, which is why he founded Dads Against Wack Strollers, a program that allows guys to win one of the company’s creations. Says Coblentz: “I’d rather they put their kids through college than buy a Roddler.”

THE MOST STYLISH MAG FOR MUMS & BUBS FROM 0-8

“BUY of the Moment”  Here in Australia we might be clinging to the poptastic hues of the Bugaboo while we wait for the Orbit Baby travel system to hit our stores, but blingtastic mums stateside are on The Roddler by Kid Kustoms - a wild looking, fully customized pram being sported by the younger, edgier famous-parent set (think Nicole Riche and Joel Maden).  You’d need a celebrity income to afford it, but your husband would probably be prepared to take on a second job in order to push around what can only be described as the Shelby Mustang of baby gear.

Grand National Roadster Show 2008

lj23.jpgKid Kustoms and Lebron James have some similar traits. They are superstars, global icons and both have their name on†the Roddler. Having been touted as the next best thing to being pushed,†and decked out with all of the finest appointments, it was impossible for King James to pass up the chance to get this one of a kind piece for the heir to his throne. Adored in the Cavaliers Colors, he opted for butter soft leather with custom embroideries, Harman/Kardon’s Drive and Play II, custom paint and billet parts galore. Imagine the possibilities in building your ideal model and check out our catalog of kustom features and accessories. With you at the helm, junior should get used to being the envy of the pack.

Kid Kustoms is collaborating with PPG industries and Wheaty Wheat Studios to bring you completely new medium and international forum to display your talents.  They have invited the world’s best hot rod stripers, street artists, illustrators, air brushers, graphic designers, and cartoonists to compete in one of 3 categories to generate awareness and resources for this year’s charitable organizations. Participation is by invite only.

The event works as follows:

1)           Each participant is provided a set of fenders. While interchangeable on any of the Kid Kustoms Roddler strollers, the finished products will be displayed in prominent galleries worldwide, and auctioned off on a custom mounted frame, signed by the artist and with a letter of authenticity.

2)           Upon submission of their works, our D.A.W.S (Dads Against Wack Strollers) subscribers and the readership from the esteemed magazines providing event coverage will be voting to determine who were the top ten and then favoured artists in each category.

3)           The winner from each category will be auctioned off on a Roddler, with proceeds from all sales being donated to the artists’ choice of the participating charitable foundations listed below. The only stipulation for the contest is fenders must be painted in the Kid Kustoms color palate, which consists of 9 offerings from the PPG Vibrance collection that are exclusive to the Roddler.

“What we are doing is the first undertaking of its kind. It blurs the bounds between art mediums, the automotive world, fashion, technology and juvenile product realm. We are practicing the art of science through aesthetic appeal, functional design and thought provoking reason“ says Jamie Coblentz, president of Kid Kustoms and Pinstripe Prep.

Five charities were selected to be the beneficiaries for this year’s event. The reason being was to ensure that the participants feel they are contributing to a cause they feel close to. The organizations chosen to be the recipients of the goodwill are: One is Greater than None, UNICEF, Sacred Circle, Action Against Hunger and Conservation International.

Your Life Decoded, WISH LIST HOLIDAY 2007. KID KUSTOMS RETRO STROLLER

“Inspired by 1950’s vintage hotrods, the Roddler cruises like no other stroller on the strip, boasting a custom pearl paint job (pinstriped or flamin’ fenders extra) and sweet seat-cover options like faux alligator, ostrich, snakeskin, or sting ray. The monocoque chassis makes it lighter and stronger than other buggies, and leaf-spring suspension yields a smoother ride. The onboard climate control, LCD screen (integrated into the canopy), DVD player, and surround sound ensure that baby rocks while you roll. You can also jam to tunes via the Harman Kardon iPod dock or confirm play-dates on the Bluetooth speakerphone. Pretty stylin’ for a breedermobile. –Jennifer Hillner
